This tour will show you 'the Art of Berlin', which consists not only in its artistic production, but also in its life-style. So you will see images not just of 'high-art' (including even some 'posh' or 'artsy fartsy' productions), but also very popular art (including 'street art', graffiti and even some nice and very 'Berlinian' 'kitsch') and 'everyday art', such as architecture, fashion and culinary environments... And a little bit of general 'atmosphere' and 'humour'... ;-)

The tour started at the "Soho House Berlin" (a top designer's club), where my guests, Pedro Ferraz and his friend Nicole were staying. You will see how we walked towards and then through the "Barn Quarter" with its many art galleries. First however I tried to give Nicole and Pedro a feeling of "life" in this area before immerging ourselves in the world of art... So, to begin with, we saw the shopping 'mile' of Alte and Neue Schönhauser Street, before marvelling at the beauties of the Hackesche Höfe and the very special style of the Rosenhöfe (a series of courtyards for shopping). Passing by the old Handwerkervereinshaus in Sophien Street (a former meeting point of craftsmen respectively an early HQ of the unionist movement, now housing cultural venues called Sophiensäle), we went through the Sophie-Gips-Höfe with its art installations (for images see the photos I shot during my preparatory visits) and the private art collection Hoffmann, to then have a first pause at the Café-Bar Hackbarth (see, we didn't 'kill' ourselves...). With recovered strength, we strolled down Auguststreet and through many an art gallery and institution, until Oranienburger Street with the "Kunsthaus Tacheles" (an art center in a ruinous former department store occupied by squatters). We then enjoyed a break at the stylish "DaDa Falafel", continuing up Linienstreet and Tucholskystreet. Finally we saw another most idyllic series of courtyards: the Heckmann-Höfe, right next to the famous New Synagogue. From there I accompanied my hosts across the Isle of the Museums, our 'Prussian Acropolis' towards the most prestigious boulevard of Berlin "Unter den Linden", where we finally had to say good bye!

The pictures will show you not only the most serious art places, but also the atmosphere of the quarter including its architecture, shops and boutiques, pointing out the stark difference between the looks of houses at the time when "The Wall" came down and now.... Important institutions to mention are the "C/O Berlin", the "KW - Kunstwerke", the "me collector's room" and the newly revived "Jüdische Mädchenschule". Some of the individual art galleries will be identifiable through the pictures; please forgive me, if I do not have the time to name everything and everybody!

If you want to see more pictures of the 'environment', then please do visit the fotos I took while preparing the tour. And you will find a series of images especially dedicated to the ceramic art of Hinrich Kröger, which we could not see that day (closed). Finally I propose further impressions of the Graffiti- or Street Art, that we saw in the artist's project "Haus Schwarzenberg", where houses are preserved in the state they were in when "The Wall" fell.

You might also want to have a look at terms for the art trends we saw which I listed up below...
And if you like more Berlin Art (Graffiti and 'serious') plus architecture have a look here and here and here.

And how did Nicole and Pablo like the tour? Well, Pablo's mother (who arranged the tour) wrote back:

Guest Feed-Back:

art-trends 2012 in berlin's "barn quarter":
(in order of appearance...; terms I invented are in inverted commas...):

"gay art"
paper cut-outs
painted sculptures
"neo-baroque figurative"
neo-expressionism
"scriptural art"
graphic art
video art
"brutal art"
bio art
"photo painting"
minimalism
concept art
kitsch art
surrealist, minimalist and (hyper-)realistic sculpture
tempo art = neo-futurism = "wiped art"

and practically no abstract art...

well, if you want to know precisely what these terms mean or hint at, please look at the pictures,
or do an 'art tour' with me...! ;-)
